La Fortaleza, Puerto Rico – March 18, 2026 – The Governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González-Colón, issued a statement in support of the 60-day waiver of the Jones Act announced by Donald J. Trump, in response to the current situation in the Middle East stemming from the conflict with Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The waiver will allow foreign-flagged vessels, on a temporary basis, to transport essential goods, including oil, natural gas, fertilizers, and coal,to U.S. ports, helping to ease logistical constraints and ensure the continuous flow of critical resources.
“This temporary waiver represents a federal effort to stabilize markets and directly protect essential supply chains. It also ensures the efficient flow of energy supplies to American bases and military installations on both the East and West Coasts. With this action, President Trump is advancing the continuity of critical resource supply while addressing the current conflict in the Middle East,” the Governor stated.
The Governor emphasized that the Jones Act remains a fundamental pillar of the United States’ economic and national security framework, supporting a domestic maritime industry and ensuring access to reliable trade routes.
“Puerto Rico remains aligned with federal efforts to strengthen the security and stability of supply chains, safeguard national security priorities, and ensure the protection of our people during this period of global challenges,” the Governor concluded.
Our administration, in coordination with PRFAA, will continue to monitor global developments and assess the impact of the waiver on energy supply and the cost of living in Puerto Rico.
