GOVERNMENT OF PUERTO RICO

Governor Jenniffer González-Colón Highlights Historic Expansion of Bilingual Schools, Fulfilling Her Commitment to Public Education

July 31, 2026

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Governor Jenniffer González-Colón today reaffirmed that education remains one of the top priorities of her administration and announced the historic expansion of Puerto Rico's bilingual school program as one of the most impactful initiatives for the Island's future.

The Governor recalled that, during the last election campaign, she pledged to strengthen public education and expand access to bilingual programs so that every student in Puerto Rico's public school system would have the opportunity to develop proficiency in both Spanish and English.

"This commitment was not simply written into a government platform. It became a central priority of our administration because we believe Puerto Rico's future begins in the classroom, and no child should have their opportunities limited by where they were born or by the school they attend," Governor González-Colón said.

As part of this public policy, the Government has increased the number of bilingual schools from 36 to 119 in just a year and a half, expanding the program to 55 municipalities and benefiting more than 15,000 students across the Island.

Governor González-Colón explained that the initiative goes beyond teaching a second language and is designed to prepare students to compete successfully in an increasingly global economy.

"Speaking English is no longer a luxury—it is an essential tool for opening doors in higher education, science, technology, business, and the professional world. It is our responsibility to ensure that every student in Puerto Rico has access to those opportunities through our public schools," she said.

The Governor emphasized that the expansion of bilingual schools is part of a broader vision to transform Puerto Rico's public education system by placing students at the center of government decision-making.

She also recognized the dedication of teachers, principals, school staff, and parents, whose daily commitment makes these programs successful in communities throughout the Island.

"This transformation would not be possible without the dedication of our educators and Puerto Rican families. They are the ones who turn this public policy into real opportunities for thousands of children every day," she added.

The Governor reiterated that strengthening public education is the most important investment any government can make because its benefits extend across generations.

Finally, Governor González-Colón affirmed that her administration will continue advancing initiatives that strengthen Puerto Rico's education system and expand opportunities for future generations.

"Our commitment is to continue removing barriers, expanding opportunities, and preparing our students to succeed in any environment. Investing in education is investing in Puerto Rico's future. We made that commitment to the people, and we will continue delivering on it every single day," Governor González-Colón concluded.
