Governor Announces FEMA Review Council Visit to Puerto Rico

August 28, 2025

San Juan, Puerto Rico – August 28, 2025 – The Governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González Colón, announced that the FEMA Review Council will be visiting the Island on September 24 as part of a series of sessions being held across the country. The visit comes at the Governor’s invitation and is part of a strategy, developed jointly with PRFAA, COR3, and the Department of Public Safety to position Puerto Rico as an active participant in the evaluation and reform process of the federal agency and its disaster response and recovery operations.

The FEMA Review Council was established by President Donald Trump through Executive Order 14180, with the purpose of advising him on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) current capacity to respond effectively and impartially to disasters across the nation. The Council is also tasked with recommending changes that strengthen the agency and ensure its performance aligns with the national interest.

During its visit to Puerto Rico, the Council will hold an executive session convened by the Governor, with the participation of agency heads, to gather direct input on the proposed FEMA reforms. These discussions are part of a broader national effort to ensure that all communities, including those in Puerto Rico, have an active voice in this process.

“It is essential that Puerto Rico play an active role in this review. We have experienced firsthand the challenges posed by emergencies and natural disasters, and it is crucial that those realities be considered in any reforms. The visit of the FEMA Review Council represents a unique opportunity to ensure that our priorities translate into concrete action from Washington. This is part of a proactive effort by our administration to contribute solutions to the national conversation and to help FEMA become a more agile, less bureaucratic agency that responds directly to the needs of our communities. As Resident Commissioner, I secured the largest allocation of reconstruction funds in Puerto Rico’s history, and today, as Governor, my priority is ensuring that these resources are deployed swiftly and effectively,” stated Governor González Colón.

The Government of Puerto Rico reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the Council and with President Trump’s Administration to strengthen disaster response mechanisms, build community capacity, and ensure that resources reach those most in need in an efficient and timely manner.
