April 8, 2026 – San Juan, Puerto Rico – In an effort to mitigate the impact of the ongoing partial federal government shutdown on employees of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Puerto Rico, Governor Jenniffer González-Colón, alongside Secretary of the Treasury Ángel L. Pantoja Rodríguez and Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Gabriella Boffelli, announced an extension of the tax filing deadline. This measure is intended to provide relief to qualifying federal employees, allowing them to meet their tax obligations without incurring penalties or interest.
“We understand the challenges our federal employees are facing as a result of the partial government shutdown, and for that reason, I have taken concrete actions to support them during this period. This extension provides additional time to fulfill their tax responsibilities without added pressure, allowing affected employees to file their returns and make payments within an additional 30-day period, ensuring that no interest or penalties are assessed due to delays,” stated Governor González-Colón.
Secretary Pantoja Rodríguez emphasized that “granting this additional time provides affected federal employees with greater flexibility to file their tax returns without incurring penalties or interest, given their current circumstances. It is important to note that this extension applies exclusively to these taxpayers; therefore, the filing deadline for all others remains April 15. To benefit from this extension, individuals must submit the Extension Request (Form SC 2644) through SURI. Our goal is to provide meaningful and tangible relief to those navigating this situation.”
PRFAA Executive Director Gabriella Boffelli added, “We are committed to coordinating efforts to ensure that every affected employee receives the necessary assistance. This initiative reflects our commitment to support federal personnel effectively and promptly in Puerto Rico, working hand in hand with our agencies. This action aligns with a measure adopted by the U.S. Department of the Treasury on April 1, which granted similar relief to employees impacted by the partial government shutdown. The federal measure also includes a 30-day extension to file tax returns and pay taxes without penalties or interest, reaffirming the coordination between local and federal authorities for the benefit of affected employees.”
Governor González-Colón reiterated her commitment to continue implementing measures that protect workers and contribute to Puerto Rico’s economic stability.
