Governor González-Colón first announced the approval of the funding on December 11, 2024, as part of the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
The new facility will provide modern, specialized lodging for members of the U.S. Armed Forces participating in advanced training at Fort Buchanan. The project is also expected to generate significant local economic activity, with approximately $1.8 million in construction excise taxes and municipal fees allocated to the Municipality of Guaynabo.
